kW vs kWh for Solar: What Homeowners Need to Know
Understand the difference between solar system size in kW and electricity usage in kWh.

Short answer
kW measures solar system capacity. kWh measures energy used or produced over time. A solar estimate uses both: your home uses kWh, and the system is sized in kW.
Why it matters
A 9 kW system does not produce 9 kWh every hour. Production depends on sun, shade, weather, roof orientation, system losses, and seasonality.
How the calculator connects kWh to kW
SolarCalcNow multiplies monthly usage by 12, applies the selected offset target, then divides the target annual production by the shade-adjusted annual yield. The result is increased for the model's 14% system-loss assumption. This produces a planning size in kW DC, not a site design.
How kW becomes panel count and roof area
Panel count is the calculated system watts divided by the selected panel wattage, rounded up. Roof area then uses 21 square feet per panel plus a 15% spacing factor. Real layouts can need more or less usable roof because setbacks, access paths, obstructions, and module dimensions are not measured here.
